Mayor Pete has big labor ideas
Mayor Pete has bold ideas on rebuilding labor power in the 21st century.
There’s lots in here, but to me, the biggest innovation is an outcome focus (e.g. a target of DOUBLING union density).
Too often, labor ideas are all about process (you get a union if you try real hard).
Today I’m proud to announce a new plan that will empower all workers, lift wages, and give workers and employers the tools they need to thrive.
Our economy is changing. Our laws and policies should too.

Indeed, there’s strong messaging in here on showing workers the money and getting the lawyers out of the way:
- ALL workers need more power, because it’s all about power.
- Your pay should reflect your hours.
- Not a study group, actually closing the gender and racial pay gaps.
Instead of waiting for some complex technical way to compel multi-employer organizing, the decision would rest with the workers themselves.
While federal policy has tilted against unions since the 1940s, mandating multi-employer bargaining tilts back the other way.
Just as labor unions are a countervailing power against market power, so too can be the government. Instead of government procurement tied to indirect measures like allowing pro-union signs at worksites (Obama era idea), here’s a plan to give preference to unionized contractors.
I’ll be curious to see how this plan develops in the coming months (e.g. does Pete support repealing Taft-Hartley + banning so-called “right to work” laws at state level), and if some of the other candidates respond by ratcheting up their own proposals. Stay tuned. For those interested in other outcome-focused labor reforms (including how to deal with the international dimension), I present you my report: “Seven Strategies to Rebuild Worker Power for the 21st Century Global Economy”.
